SUMMARY:Cantus
DESCRIPTION:[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nThe “intellectually\, emotionally\, and musically rich” (Star Tribune) men’s vocal ensemble Cantus is widely known for its trademark warmth and blend\, innovative programming\, and its engaging performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Following their appearance at Longwood Gardens last season\, Cantus comes to Center City to explore the sumptuous ‘Cathedral sound’ as part of Concerts at the Cathedral Basilica. \nCantus performs their program Discovery of Sight. Light is an integral part of life\, from governing our daily habits and cycles\, to providing nourishment\, warmth\, and protection. But what happens when the light is taken away\, or restored? We all have experienced our own personal ‘sunrises’ or ‘twilight hours.’ There are even moments in our lives when we recognize the impact of vision in new ways. \nIncluding music by Schubert\, Strauss\, Eric Whitacre\, and many others\, this program revels in the mystery\, science\, and poetry of what it means to truly ‘see.’ \n[push h=”20″] \n[button id=”” style=”border” class=”” align=”” link=”https://cathedralphilaconcerts.ticketleap.com/cantus/details” linkTarget=”_self” bgColor=”accent1″ hover_color=”accent1″ font=”20″ icon=”ticket” icon_placement=”left” icon_color=””]Buy Tickets[/button] \n[/column]

Thirty-four voices and an orchestra of 20—all led by conductor Julian Wachner—fill the Cathedral Basilica with the glorious sounds of this innovative and forward-looking work of early Baroque genius. \n“Monteverdi’s epic Vespers of 1610 stands alone in the repertoire as a culmination of one time period and the confident heralding of the new. A virtual encyclopedia displaying all that was possible compositionally up until that point\, and ushering in the new style that was to reach its zenith in the monumental works of Handel\, Bach and Vivaldi!”  —Julian Wachner \n\n\n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \n[button id=”” style=”border” class=”” align=”” link=”https://cathedralphilaconcerts.ticketleap.com/choir-of-trinity-wall-street/details” linkTarget=”_self” bgColor=”accent1″ hover_color=”accent1″ font=”20″ icon=”ticket” icon_placement=”left” icon_color=””]Buy Tickets[/button] \n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nChoir of Trinity Wall Street\nTrinity Baroque Orchestra\nJulian Wachner\, Director\n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nProgram\nClaudio Monteverdi 1610 Vespers of the Blessed Virgin \n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \n[tabs layout=”horizontal” nav_color=”accent2″ left_color=”accent8″ right_color=”accent1″]\n[tab icon=”” title=”Ensemble”]\n[column_1 width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nAs peerless interpreters of both early and new music\, the GRAMMY®-nominated Choir of Trinity Wall Street has changed the realm of 21st-century vocal music\, breaking new ground with its artistry described as “blazing with vigour… a choir from heaven” (The Times\, London). \nThis premiere ensemble\, under the direction of Julian Wachner\, can be heard both in New York City and around the world in performances alternately described as “thrilling” (The New Yorker)\, “musically top-notch” (The Wall Street Journal)\, and “simply superb” (The New York Times). The Choir leads the liturgical music on Sundays at Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel\, while performing in Bach at One\, Compline by Candlelight\, and many other concerts and festivals throughout the year\, often with the Trinity Baroque Orchestra andNOVUS NY. Critically acclaimed annual performances of Handel’s Messiah are part of its long and storied tradition\, and attending the Choir’s performances at Trinity’s annual Twelfth Night Festival has quickly become the holiday tradition of many New Yorkers as well. \n\nThe Choir has toured extensively throughout the United States\, making appearances at Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Berkeley Early Music Festival\, BAM Next Wave Festival\, and the Prototype Festival. The Choir is also increasingly in demand internationally\, and recent seasons have seen performances at Paris’s Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and London’s Barbican Theatre. The Choir has been featured with the Bang on a Can All-Stars\, the New York Philharmonic\, and with the Rolling Stones on their 50th anniversary tour. \nIn addition to their GRAMMY®-nominated Israel in Egypt CD\, The Choir of Trinity Wall Street has released several recordings with Naxos\, Musica Omnia\, VIA Recordings\, and Avie Records. Trinity’s long-term commitment to new music is evident in recordings and collaborations with living composers such as Du Yun\, Paola Prestini\, Ralf Gawlick\, Elena Ruehr\, and Julia Wolfe\, whose 2015 Pulitzer Prize–winning work Anthracite Fields was recorded with The Choir. The 2015-16 season promises to continue The Choir’s long-standing reputation for conferring a “musical blessing” (New York Times) on New York City and beyond. \n[/column_1]\n[/tab] \n[tab icon=”” title=”Julian Wachner”]\n[column_1 width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nJulian Wachner \nGrammy-nominated conductor Julian Wachner is one of North America’s most exciting and versatile musicians\, sought after as conductor\, composer\, and keyboard artist.  Recent and upcoming engagements include those with the Lincoln Center Festival (The Blind)\, BAM Next Wave Festival (Liederabend 2013)\, Juilliard Opera Theatre (2013 Mainstage)\, The Rolling Stones (50th anniversary tour)\, New York City Opera (VOX)\, Hong Kong Philharmonic\, TENET (TENEbrae)\, Portland Baroque (Messiah)\, and with Carnegie Hall (Arvo Pärt Passio). \nAs Director of Music and the Arts at New York’s historic Trinity Wall Street\, Wachner oversees an annual season of over 900 events\, including Trinity’s numerous and varied concert offerings\, series and festivals\, museum expositions\, dance and theatre performances\, poetry and literary readings\, and educational/outreach initiatives in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn in partnership with New York City’s public school system. \nAt Trinity Wall Street\, Wachner serves as the Principal Conductor of NOVUS NY (Trinity’s resident contemporary music orchestra)\, and the Trinity Baroque Orchestra & Choir of Trinity Wall Street\, recently nominated for a 2012 GRAMMY award for its recording of Handel’s complete Israel in Egypt. He also is the director of Bach at One\, Trinity’s weekly performances of the Cantatas of J. S. Bach. Performances this season with TWS include Bach’s Matthew Passion\, Christmas Oratorio\, B-minor Mass\, the complete late works of Igor Stravinsky (April 2013)\, and the complete non-operatic works of Benjamin Britten (Fall 2013). To open the 2012-13 Season\, Wachner conceived of and directed Trinity’s Twelve in 12 Festival celebrating the Pulitzer Prize in music.  Of this festival\, Steve Smith noted in Time Out that “some ideas seem so utterly obvious and right at a glance that you wonder why it took someone so long to hatch them. ‘Twelve in 12’ is that kind of notion…Mark your calendars\, and give thanks.” \nWachner is also Music Director of the Grammy Award-winning Washington Chorus\, with whom he won ASCAP’s Alice Parker award for adventurous programming in 2011.  Wachner has also made memorable guest appearances with such major organizations as the Philadelphia Orchestra\, the Montreal and Pittsburgh Symphonies\, Spoleto Festival USA\, the Handel and Haydn Society\, Glimmerglass Opera\, Hawaii Opera Theater\, New York City Opera and the Boston Pops.  A Baroque specialist\, he was the founding Music Director of the Boston Bach Ensemble and the Bach Académie de Montréal\, besides serving as Artistic Director of International Bach Festivals in Boston and Montreal.  In 2011 he founded New York City’s newest music festival\, The Twelfth Night Festival of Early Music\, most recently presented in collaboration with Gotham Early Music Society (GEMS) and featuring many of New York’s leading baroque and renaissance ensembles. \nIn 2010\, Wachner made New York City Opera history when he was selected as both conductor and composer at the company’s annual VOX festival of contemporary opera leading to the invitation to be the sole conductor of this Festival in 2012.  His original music has been variously described as “jazzy\, energetic\, and ingenious” (Boston Globe)\, having “splendor\, dignity\, outstanding tone combinations\, sophisticated chromatic exploration…a rich backdrop\, wavering between a glimmer and a tingle…” (La Scena Musicale)\, being “a compendium of surprises” (Washington Post)\, and as “bold and atmospheric”\, having “an imaginative flair for allusive text setting” and noted for “the silken complexities of his harmonies” (New York Times.) The American Record Guide noted that “Wachner is both an unapologetic modernist and an open-minded eclectic – his music has something to say.”  E. C. Schirmer publishes his complete catalogue\, comprising over 80 titles. \nWachner’s performances inspire uncommon praise.  The New York Times pronounced his Trinity Wall Street debut “superbly performed” and\, this season\, noted that the ensemble’s annual Lincoln Center presentation of Handel’s Messiah was “led with both fearsome energy and delicate grace…a model of what is musically and emotionally possible with this venerable score.” Of his interpretation of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion\, according to the Boston Globe\, “there was genius here and no mistaking it.”  Anne Midgette\, of The Washington Post\, declared recent Wagner and Verdi performances “exhilarating\,” commenting: “Julian Wachner knows how to draw maximum drama from a score\,” and noted that he was “emphatic and theatrical and so at home in opera that he could bring out the requisite sense of drama.”  Following his account of the Messiah at the Philadelphia Orchestra\, the Inquirer’s David Patrick Stearns observed: “Few conductors have drawn such focused\, committed\, and meticulous music-making as Julian Wachner. … [He] built the music\, line by line\, as an architectural edifice\, serving both the music’s emotional and more purely aesthetic elements.”  As a result\, Stearns “couldn’t help fantasize that [Wachner] might do an annual Philadelphia Orchestra festival of Bach and Handel.” \nAn award-winning organist and improvisateur\, Wachner’s solo recital at the Spoleto Festival USA featured an improvised finale that inspired one reviewer to conclude: “This stupefying wizardry was the hit of the recital\, and it had to be heard to be believed” (Post and Courier\, South Carolina).  As a concert pianist\, in his recent Kennedy Center Rachmaninoff performance\, the Washington Post noted “Wachner dazzled with some bravura keyboard work\, both in the rhapsodic accompaniments to the songs and…in the highly virtuosic transcription of the Dances.” \nWachner’s recordings are with the Chandos\, Naxos\, Atma Classique\, Arsis\, Dorian\, Musica Omnia\, and Titanic labels. \n[/column_1]\n[/tab]\n[/tabs] \n[/column]

The ensemble has been praised for its seamless blend of high-quality individual voices\, exquisite tuning\, and clarity of sound. After a performance on the acclaimed Miller Theater Early Music Series in February 2016\, the New York Times called the group’s program “revelatory\,” adding that singers “blended beautifully.” \nThe majority of the group met at one of the most significant centers for early music in Europe: the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Vox Luminis has performed in festivals and venues in Belgium (Nuits de Septembre de Liège\, festival de Stavelot\, Juillet Musical de Saint-Hubert\, Automne Musical de Spa\, MA festival Bruges\, festival van Vlanderen Gent\, Laus Polifoniae Antwerpen\, festival des midi-Minimes\, Eté Musical de Roisin\, Société Philharmonique de Namur…); France (festival d’Ambronay\, festival de Saintes\, Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay\, festival de Saint-Michel en Thiérarche\, Midsummer festival d’Hardelot\, festival Contrepoint 62\, Festival Musique et Mémoire de Luxeuil\, Musique et Natures en Bauges\, festival Bach en Combrailles…); Germany (Ratingen Bachtage festival\, Muziekfest Stuttgart); The Netherlands (Oude Muziek Utrecht\, Den Haag\, Delft); Portugal (Centro Cultural Bélem-Lisbon) and Croatia (Varazdin Baroque Evenings). \nVox Luminis records exclusively for the Belgian Label Ricercar. The ensemble’s first recording\, released in 2007\, features four vocal works by Domenico Scarlatti\, including his famous ten-part Stabat Mater. In 2010 the ensemble released its second album\, Samuel Scheidt: Sacrae Cantiones\, which features several world premieres. Vox Luminis’ 2012 recording of Heinrich Schütz’s Musicalische Exequien has received several prestigious awards including Gramophone’s Recording of the Year\, the Baroque Vocal Gramophone Award and the International Classical Music Award. Other recordings have also received awards throughout the world including Gramophone’s Editor’s Choice\, Diapason d’Or\, Choc de Classica\, Muse d’Or Baroque\, Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik\, Joker de Crescendo and Prix Caecilia. \nVox Luminis is very grateful to have the support of the Federation Wallonie-Bruxelles and the City of Namur. \n[/column_1]\n[/tab] \n[tab icon=”” title=”Lionel Meunier”]\n[column_1 width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nLionel Meunier was born in France. Passionate about music from a young age\, he began his musical education at the local school in his hometown of Clamecy where he studied solfege\, recorder and trumpet. Meunier continued his studies at the Institut Supérieur de Musique et de Pédagogie\, Namur\, where he subsequently graduated with a high distinction in recorder studies in 2004. During his time at IMEP\, Meunier was a student of Tatiana Babut du Maresm but also took part in masterclasses with Jean Tubéry\, and also with Hugo Reyne. After his graduation\, Meunier began to focus on his vocal career\, studying with Rita Dams and Peter Kooij at the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague. \nSince then\, Meunier has sung with numerous top ensembles in Europe such as Collegium Vocale Gent (P. Herreweghe)\, World Youth Choir\, Arsys Bourgogne (P. Cao)\, Amsterdam Baroque Choir (T. Koopman)\, Namur Chamber Choir and Ex Tempore\, and with soloist ensembles such as I Favoriti de la Fenice (J. Tubery)\, the Soloists of Namur Chamber Choir\, Capella Pratensis\, and the soloist ensemble of the Nederlandse Bachvereeniging. These experiences have given Meunier the opportunity to work with many of today’s leading specialists including Christophe Rousset\, Tonu Kaljuste\, Gustav Leonhardt\, Roberto Gini\, Jean-Claude Malgoire\, Paul Dombrecht\, Florian Heyerick\, Rinaldo Alessandrini and Richard Egarr. Meunier continues to be active as a vocal soloist\, performing repertoire such Schubert’s Mass in A Minor\, Bach’s St John Passion\, Haydn’s Stabat Mater and Nelson Mass\, Kronung Mass\, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor\, and Franck’s Mass in G. \nMeunier drew on his broad wealth of vocal experience and collaboration to form the critically acclaimed vocal ensemble Vox Luminis in 2004\, which was later to become his predominant musical focus. Since its inception\, the ensemble has been praised for each of its concert appearances and recordings\, winning numerous prestigious awards such as the Diapason d’Or\, Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik CHOC de Classica\, and being named as Gramophone Editor’s Choice. However\, it was Vox Luminis’ seminal recording of Schütz’s Musikalische (considered now to be the new reference for the repertoire) that really brought them to the fore of the choral and early music world. In 2012\, the disc won unarguably one of the most coveted recording awards\, Gramophone Recording of the Year\, along with the Gramophone Baroque Vocal Award and the International Classical Music Award. \nIn recent seasons\, Meunier has increasingly been in demand as a coach\, artistic leader\, and conductor for ensembles throughout Europe. His thoughtful approach and passion for early and a cappella repertoire\, coupled with his respect and innate understanding of singers\, allows him gently to coax the highest possible standards from those with whom he collaborates. Vox Luminis is consistently praised for its seamless blend of individual voices\, exquisite tuning\, and clarity of sound\, which Meunier is able to emulate with other vocal groups thanks to his instinctive communication skills which allows him to build trust which each musician. \nAlso impassioned by pedagogy\, Meunier and Vox Luminis regularly give masterclass and coaching\, as well as lecture on the late Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. \nIn 2013 Lionel Meunier received the “Namurois de l’Année” award for culture (Citizen Of The Year – Namur province). \n[/column_1]\n[/tab]\n[/tabs] \n[/column]

Through recordings and concert performances\, the ensemble has established itself as the leading exponent of Renaissance sacred music throughout the world. Peter Phillips has worked with the group to create\, through good tuning and blend\, the purity and clarity of sound that he feels best serves the Renaissance repertoire\, allowing every detail of the musical lines to be heard. It is the resulting beauty of sound for which The Tallis Scholars has become so widely renowned. \nThe Tallis Scholars perform in both sacred and secular venues\, usually giving around 70 concerts each year across the globe. In 2013 the group celebrated their 40th anniversary with a world tour performing 99 events in 80 venues in 16 countries and travelling sufficient air-miles to circumnavigate the globe four times. The group kicked off the year with a spectacular concert in St Paul’s Cathedral\, London\, including a performance of Thomas Tallis’ 40-part motet Spem in alium and the world premieres of works written specially for them by Gabriel Jackson and Eric Whitacre. Their new recording of the Missa Gloria tibi Trinitas by the 16th Century Tudor composer\, John Taverner\, was released on the exact anniversary of their first concert in 1973 and enjoyed six weeks at number one in the UK Specialist Classical Album Chart. \nThe Tallis Scholars’ career highlights include a tour of China in 1999\, including two concerts in Beijing; and the privilege of performing in the Sistine Chapel in April 1994 to mark the final stage of the complete restoration of the Michelangelo frescoes\, broadcast on Italian and Japanese television. The ensemble has commissioned many contemporary composers during their history: in 1998 they celebrated their 25th Anniversary with a special concert in London’s National Gallery\, premiering a Sir John Tavener work written for the group and narrated by Sting. A further performance was given with Sir Paul McCartney in New York in 2000. The Tallis Scholars are broadcast regularly on radio (including performances from the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in 2007\, 2008\, 2011 and 2013) and have also been featured on the acclaimed ITV program The Southbank Show. \nMuch of The Tallis Scholars reputation for their pioneering work has come from their association with Gimell Records\, set up by Peter Phillips and Steve Smith in 1980 solely to record the group. In February 1994 Peter Phillips and The Tallis Scholars performed on the 400th anniversary of the death of Palestrina in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore\, Rome\, where Palestrina had trained as a choirboy and later worked as Maestro di Cappella. The concerts were recorded by Gimell and are available on both CD and DVD. \nRecordings by The Tallis Scholars have attracted many awards throughout the world. In 1987 their recording of Josquin’s Missa La sol fa re mi and Missa Pange lingua received Gramophone magazine’s Record of the Year award\, the first recording of early music ever to win this coveted award. In 1989 the French magazine Diapason gave two of its Diapason d’Or de l’Année awards for the recordings of a mass and motets by Lassus and for Josquin’s two masses based on the chanson L’Homme armé. Their recording of Palestrina’s Missa Assumpta est Maria and Missa Sicut lilium was awarded Gramophone’s Early Music Award in 1991; they received the 1994 Early Music Award for their recording of music by Cipriano de Rore; and the same distinction again in 2005 for a recording of music by John Browne. The Tallis Scholars were nominated for a Grammy Award in 2001\, 2009 and 2010. In 2012 their recording of Josquin’s Missa De beata virgine and Missa Ave maris stella received a Diapason d’Or de l’Année and in their 40th anniversary year they were welcomed into the Gramophone ‘Hall of Fame’ by public vote. \nThese accolades and achievements are continuing evidence of the exceptionally high standard maintained by The Tallis Scholars\, and of the dedication to one of the great repertoires in Western classical music. \n[/column_1]\n[/tab] \n[tab icon=”” title=”Peter Phillips”]\n[column_1 width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nPeter Phillips has made an impressive if unusual reputation for himself in dedicating his life’s work to the research and performance of Renaissance polyphony. Having won a scholarship to Oxford in 1972\, Peter Phillips studied Renaissance music with David Wulstan and Denis Arnold\, and gained experience in conducting small vocal ensembles\, already experimenting with the rarer parts of the repertoire. He founded the Tallis Scholars in 1973\, with whom he has now appeared in over 2000 concerts and made over 60 discs\, encouraging interest in polyphony all over the world. As a result of his work\, through concerts\, recordings\, magazine awards and publishing editions of the music and writing articles\, Renaissance music has come to be accepted for the first time as part of the mainstream classical repertoire. The Tallis Scholars celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2013 with 99 concerts\, worldwide. \nApart from the Tallis Scholars\, Peter Phillips continues to work with other specialist ensembles. He has appeared with the BBC Singers\, the Collegium Vocale of Ghent and the Netherlands Chamber Choir\, and is currently working with the Choeur de Chambre de Namur\, Intrada of Moscow\, Musica Reservata of Barcelona and El Leon de Oro of Orviedo. He gives numerous master-classes and choral workshops every year around the world – amongst other places in Rimini (Italy)\, Evora (Portugal) and Barcelona (Spain). In 2014 he launched the London International A Cappella Choir Competition in St John’s Smith Square\, attracting choirs from all over the world. \nIn addition to conducting\, Peter Phillips is well-known as a writer. For 32 years he has contributed a regular music column (as well as one\, more briefly\, on cricket) to The Spectator. In 1995 he became the owner and Publisher of The Musical Times\, the oldest continuously published music journal in the world. His first book\, English Sacred Music 1549–1649\, was published by Gimell in 1991\, while his second\, What We Really Do\, an unblinking account of what touring is like\, alongside insights about the make-up and performance of polyphony\, was published in 2003 and again in 2013. \nPeter Phillips has made numerous television and radio broadcasts. Besides those featuring The Tallis Scholars (which include live broadcasts from the 1988\, 2001\, 2003\, 2007\, 2008\, 2011\, 2013 and 2014 BBC Proms)\, he has appeared several times on the BBC’s Music Weekly and on the BBC World Service\, on Kaleidoscope (BBC Radio 4)\, on Today (BBC Radio 4)\, National Public Radio in the US and on German\, French\, Italian\, Spanish and Canadian radio\, where he has enjoyed deploying his love of languages. In 1990 ITV’s The South Bank Show featured Peter’s ‘personal odyssey’ with the Tallis Scholars; while in 2002 a special television documentary was made for the BBC about the life and times of William Byrd. \nPeter has recently been appointed a Reed Rubin Director of Music and Bodley Fellow at Merton College\, Oxford\, where the new choral foundation he helped to establish began singing services in October 2008. They gave their first live broadcast on BBC Radio Three’s Choral Evensong in October 2011. In 2005 Peter Phillips was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture\, a decoration intended to honour individuals who have contributed to the understanding of French culture in the world. \nwww.tallisscholars.co.uk \nwww.tsss.co.uk \n[/column_1]\n[/tab]\n[/tabs] \n[/column]

The composer was captivated and inspired by the text of an early Orthodox hymn\, the Canon of Repentance to Our Lord Jesus Christ\, and the creative process for this evening-length work spanned two years of the composer’s life. According to Pärt\, “The ‘time we spent together’ was extremely enriching. That may explain why this music means so much to me.” The evening offers an immersive exploration of the singular voice of this pre-eminent contemporary choral composer\, led by one of the most prominent and published authorities in the current choral field. \n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \n[button id=”” style=”border” class=”” align=”” link=”https://cathedralphilaconcerts.ticketleap.com/westminster-williamson-voices/details” linkTarget=”_blank” bgColor=”accent1″ hover_color=”accent1″ font=”20″ icon=”ticket” icon_placement=”left” icon_color=””]Buy Tickets[/button] \n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nWestminster Williamson Voices\nJames Jordan\, Conductor\n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nProgram to Include\nArvo Pärt Kanon Pokajanen \n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \n[tabs layout=”horizontal” nav_color=”accent2″ left_color=”accent8″ right_color=”accent1″]\n[tab icon=”” title=”Ensemble”]\n[column_1 width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nWestminster Williamson Voices\nThe Grammy® nominated WESTMINSTER WILLIAMSON VOICES named for the founder of Westminster Choir College\, John Finley Williamson\, has been praised by reviewers on both sides of the Atlantic. Led by Scott Tucker\, one of the most respected artists in American choral music\, the Chamber Singers of the Choral Arts Society of Washington offer a spectacular range of sumptuous music from Monteverdi and Palestrina to music of our own time by Morten Lauridsen and Jacob Druckman. \n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \n[button id=”” style=”border” class=”” align=”” link=”https://cathedralphilaconcerts.ticketleap.com/test-event-for-2016-17-season/” linkTarget=”_self” bgColor=”accent1″ hover_color=”accent1″ font=”20″ icon=”ticket” icon_placement=”left” icon_color=””]Buy Tickets[/button] \n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nThe 16th century was a period of great expression and inventiveness by composers in Italy. The Madrigal form began as a literary movement in which composers explored the relationship of musical devices to “paint” and express text\, particularly poems of the great literary figures of their own and previous centuries such as Petrarch\, Tasso and Ariosto. Early performances of Madrigals were sung not in public concerts but at gatherings of the academic elite in societies dedicated to the study and discussion of science and the arts. \nThis program includes music of the earliest pioneers of the Madrigal form\, such as Arcadelt and Verdelot\, and shows how the form progressed in the hands of later masters such as Orlando di Lasso\, Gesualdo\, and Monteverdi. Finally\, we see the English Madrigal grow as an outcropping of the lighter Italian Madrigals\, just as\, back on the continent\, the Italians were turning their attention to opera. \n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nChoral Arts Chamber Singers\nScott Tucker\, Artistic Director\n[/column] \n[blank h=”30″] \n[/blank] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nProgram to Include\nMonteverdi Si\, Ch’lo Vorrei Morire\nWillaert O Dolce Mia Vita\nGesualdo Io pur respire in cosi gran dolor\nThomas Morley Sing We and Chant It\nThomas Weelkes Weep\, O Mine Eyes\nOrlando Gibbons The Silver Swan\nJacob Druckman The Faery Beam Upon You\nIrving Fine Have You Seen the White Lily Grow? \n[/column] \n[column width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \n[tabs layout=”horizontal” nav_color=”accent2″ left_color=”accent8″ right_color=”accent1″]\n[tab icon=”” title=”Ensemble”]\n[column_1 width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nThe Choral Arts Society of Washington\nThe Choral Arts Chamber Singersis a small vocal ensemble comprised of approximately 30 members of the Choral Arts Chorus. Launched on the occasion of Choral Arts 50thanniversary\, the creation of the Choral Arts Chamber Singers provides Choral Arts audiences with two types of experiences: One that defines the grandeur and magnificence of the symphonic chorus for which Choral Arts is known; and one that breaks the barriers created by that very genre. \nNow in their third season\, the Chamber Singers has performed at a private concert at The Embassy of Finland and was a featured performer at Music at the Phillips (The Phillips Collection). In the 2015-2016 Season the Chamber Singers celebrated the release of their first recording (a double-disc set of a collection of hymns by Charles Wesley-onein English and one in Spanish) with a recording release concert in October; joined the Pan American Symphony Orchestra on a Zarzuela program at Lisner Auditorium; partnered with American University on The Terezín Project which explored the unique role of the arts during and after the Holocaust; and presented The Imitative Game celebrating imitation in music. In 2016 the Chamber Singers will present The Art of the Italian Madrigal following the Italian Madrigal from 16th century Italy to settings of the text by contemporary composers at Historic Dumbarton Church and will perform selections from this program at Concerts at the Cathedral Basilica in Philadelphia. The Chamber singers will also present a new holiday program\, Christmastime in the City\, at Live! at 10th& G in Washington\, DCand perform their final concert of the season as part of the Concerts at Good Shepherd series in Burke\, VA. \nMembers of the Choral Arts Chamber Singers are selected based on their vocal prowess and sight reading abilities as well as their interest and availability. It is an inter-generational ensemble\, and includes members who are relatively new to the Choral Arts Chorus as well as singers who have been members for decades. In addition to volunteering as members of both ensembles\, many also volunteer for Choral Arts in other ways\, including holding roles in the Choral Arts Chorus leadership and serving as members of the Board of Directors or Young Patrons Steering Committee. They live throughout the D.C. metro-area\, and work in such sectors as primary\, secondary\, and music education\, government affairs\, law\, nonprofit\, or own their own businesses. \n[/column_1]\n[/tab] \n[tab icon=”” title=”Scott Tucker”]\n[column_1 width=”1/1″ last=”true” title=”” title_type=”single” animation=”none” implicit=”true”] \nScott Tucker\n\n\n\nUnder Scott Tucker’s artistic leadership\, the acclaimed symphonic Choral Arts Chorus has expanded to over 190 singers\, and launched the Choral Arts Chamber Singers\, a small vocal ensemble in 2014. He maintains Choral Arts’ strong connection with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) as well as continuing Choral Arts reputation as a sought-after choral ensemble\, receiving invitations from a wide- range of guest contracts with such world-class artists and ensembles as The Philadelphia Orchestra\, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra\, Andrea Bocelli\, and Sir Gilbert Levine for Peace through Music “In Our Age.” \n\n\n\nTucker has prepared the Choral Arts Chorus for such conductors as Christoph Eschenbach\, Emil de Cou\, John Mauceri\, and Rossen Milanov to perform the NSO’s performances of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis\, Orff’s Carmina Burana\, Handel’s Messiah\, Hindemith’s When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d\, NSO Pops concerts of music by Danny Elfman from Tim Burton’s movies\, as well as Rachmaninoff’s The Bells for Vassily Sinaisky. He has also prepared large-scale symphonic works for other leading conductors including Peter Schreier\, Fabio Mechetti\, Daniel Hege\, Carl St. Clair\, Heiichiro Ohyama\, Lanfranco Marcelletti\, Jr.\, and Erich Leinsdorf. Most recently\, Maestro Tucker prepared the chorus to perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 (Symphony of a Thousand) for Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra on the 100th anniversary of the U.S. premiere with the orchestra; and Verdi’s Messa da Requiem for Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\nDeeply committed to supporting new music\, Tucker continually programs world premieres\, Choral Arts commissions\, and performances of recently composed works. Prior to his tenure with Choral Arts\, Tucker commissioned and premiered more than 30 works from composers such as Ernani Aguiar\, Bernard Rands\, Steven Stucky\, Augusta Read Thomas\, Carol Barnett\, David Conte\, Libby Larsen\, and Chen Yi. \n\n\n\n\nIn addition to his Choral Arts activities\, Tucker is regularly invited to teach\, speak\, and conduct with a variety of local\, national\, and international organizations. Indeed the large chapel that stood on this site in pre-Reformation times was the regular venue for University ceremonies and was the venue where a number of early English composers took their degrees\, including Robert Fayrfax (MusB\, 1501; DMus 1504) and Christopher Tye (MusB\, 1536). One of the earliest musicians in the College was the Royalist pamphleteer\, author\, and violist Roger L’Estrange (1616–1704)\, whose family were patrons of the composer John Jenkins. Earlier still\, the great Elizabethan composer William Byrd would have been well-known to the foundress\, Lady Frances Sidney\, and indeed two very fine elegies by Byrd survive for her nephew\, the poet and courtier Sir Philip Sidney. Currently resident in the College is Dr Christopher Page (1991)\, founder and former director of the multi-award-winning Gothic Voices\, and Dr David Skinner (2006) who is director of the early music ensemble Alamire\, and Sidney’s first Director of Music. \nThe Choir’s first recording with Obsidian was Thomas Tomkins ‘These Distracted Times’ with Fretwork and Alamire\, which was awarded Editor’s Choice and CD of the Month in the Gramophone. Their most recent was music by Thomas Weelkes\, also with Fretwork\, which was nominated for a Gramophone Award in 2014. \nThe choir has since gone on to record and tour a number of innovative programmes\, and frequently tours throughout Europe and the USA. Known internationally through his many concerts and recordings with Voices of Ascension; his regular guest appearances as conductor and clinician; and his work as Artistic Director of The Dennis Keene Choral Festival\, he has emerged as one of leading choral conductors in the world today. Recognized early as an exceptional organist\, Dennis Keene began musical studies and performing in his native Los Angeles. He moved to New York City to study at The Juilliard School\, where he earned the BM\, MM\, and DMA degrees and the coveted Gaston Dethier Organ Prize as a student of Vernon de Tar. Dr. Keene also studied privately in Paris with Marie-Madeleine Duruflé\, André Marchal\, and André Isoir. Dennis Keene was active as a recitalist until his interest in conducting led him to concentrate on that discipline. He subsequently studied conducting at the Pierre Monteux School for Orchestral Conductors\, with Charles Bruck in Paris\, and with John Nelson at The Juilliard School. His passion for the finest in professional choral music can be traced to his early work as organist with Gregg Smith\, Roger Wagner\, and Margaret Hillis. In addition to his work with Voices of Ascension and The Dennis Keene Choral Festival\, Dr. Keene continues as Organist and Choirmaster of Church of the Ascension in New York City. He served for many years on the Board of Directors of Chorus America\, the national service organization for the choral field\, which honored him with the first Louis Botto Award for “innovative action and entrepreneurial zeal in developing a professional ensemble of exceptional artistic quality.” He has also served on the Choral Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts and on the Music Panel of the New York State Council on the Arts. From 1998 to 2003 Maestro Keene presented a major summer institute for the training of conductors and singers: The Dennis Keene Choral Festival\, in Kent\, Connecticut. In 1993 he began his recording association with Delos International\, with which he has recorded such best-selling CD’s as Beyond Chant\, The Duruflé Album\, and the Berlioz Te Deum. This series of highly acclaimed recordings with Voices of Ascension has secured international recognition for both conductor and chorus and become the standard for first-ranked ensembles worldwide.
